Regular Fulltime Students

The language of instruction at Burg Giebichenstein is German. In order to be admitted as a regular, degree-seeking student, applicants need proof that they have successfully passed the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (DSH / level 2 or 3 or TestDaF/level 4). The following applicants need NOT take the DSH/TestDaF:

  • those who have passed their "Abitur" at a German School abroad.
  • those who have successfully passed the "Feststellungsprüfung" at a Studienkolleg
  • those who have acquired a "Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz Stufe II"
  • those who have successfully passed the "Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung" des Goetheinstituts
  • those who have acquired the "Große or Kleine deutsche Sprachdiplom", granted by the Goethe-Institut through the University of Munich.

DSH / TestDaF and Preparatory Courses at the "Studienkolleg"

Applicants who have successfully passed the artistic aptitude test , but who do not have proof of sufficient knowledge of German, have to take the TestDaF or the "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber" (DSH-test). Both tests are administered in Halle at the Studienkolleg der Martin-Luther-Universität. The DSH - test is free of charge. It may only be repeated once. Unsuccessful attempts at other universities or Studienkollegs in Germany are fully considered. The TestDaF is administered in centers around the world. Further information under www.testdaf.de. Students need a minimum of level 4 in alle parts of the test in order to be admitted.
Applicants with little knowledge of German should directly enter the DSH preparatory course and take the DSH the year thereafter. During this year students are not registered with the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, but with the Studienkolleg der Martin-Luther-Universität. It is not possible to follow classes at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle during this year. Instead, students are urged to work intensively on their language skills. In order to take the preparatory course students should have proof of basic knowledge of German.  In general, it is recommended that students acquire the necessary language skills already in their home country. Spaces at the Studienkolleg are limited and students cannot be guaranteed to be admitted. Although the preparatory courses are free of charge for our prospective students, applicants should take into consideration the high cost of living in Germany. Taking German classes at the Studienkolleg will extend their period of study for at least one year. Also, available spots are very limited and there is no guarantee for such a place inthe Studienkolleg.

Visiting Students

The future adviser and the faculty commission will decide whether the applicant’s knowledge of German is sufficient to allow for a cooperation.
