Requirements for fulltime studies

A minimum level of language skills is essential, as the tasks of the aptitude test and the finterview are in German. Language requirement until admission to the degree programme: Passed German Language Examination for University Admission of Foreign Study Applicants (DSH) Level 2 or 3 or Test DaF, in which all parts have been completed with at least TDN 4. In addition, the following language certificates are accepted:

  • University entrance qualification from a German-speaking school abroad
  • a passed assessment test at a German Studienkolleg (DSH II)
  • the Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, Level II
  • passing the central upper secondary examination of the Goethe Institute
  • the “Großes or Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom”, awarded by the Goethe-Institut on behalf of the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich

DSH Examination and preparatory course at the Studienkolleg

Applicants who have passed the artistic aptitude test and have the equivalent of a German Abitur can only be enrolled if they can prove that they have the language skills required for fulltime study (see section 1).

The DSH examination and the DaF test can be taken in Halle at the Studienkolleg of Martin Luther University. The DSH examination is free of charge and can only be repeated once. Any DSH examination that was not passed at another university or at another Studienkolleg is to be credited. TestDaF is free of charge and can be taken at any test centre worldwide. Information on centres and dates can be found on the homepage www.testdaf.de.

If the German language skills are poor, it is advisable to go directly to the preparatory course at the Studienkolleg and not take the DSH examination until the following year. During this time, the student is not enrolled at Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, but at the Studienkolleg of the University of Halle. Regular attendance of courses at the Kunsthochschule is not possible during this time. Rather, the student should work intensively on improving language skills.

In order to be admitted to the preparatory course, students must already have a basic knowledge of the language. As a general rule, foreign applicants should, if possible, acquire the language skills required for university studies in Germany in their country of origin. There is no legal entitlement to a place on the German course at the Studienkolleg. The number of places is limited.

It is also possible to attend another Studienkolleg in Germany. Near Halle, for example, there are Studienkollegs in Leipzig or Köthen. You can find a complete list here.
