Notes on Empathy

April 2021, Kirstin Burckhardt

i. Empathy often includes the feeling of "sameness", but it does not mean "feeling the same".

ii. Presupposing that another feels the same moves into what I call 'toxified empathy'. It is an 'empathy without borders' in that it does not consider another(s) experience as possibly other. This can also happen without ill-meaning. How to embrace foreignness, opening space to feel one's own? Isn't it especially in love that we hope to feel the same?

iii. Deep listening is crucial. Actively co-listening to another's non/verbal expressions and how they resonate in my body makes empathy both immediate and reflective.

iv. Empathy is inter/intracorporeal. Imagine two instruments next to each other. Playing one affects the other in constant inter/intraaffective resonance. But the sound of the two is not the same. Each are situated in their place together.

v. Together with my colleague Tue Sovso, we have tentatively defined empathy as a benevolent engagement with the affective states of others which provides us with a grasp of their state and produces an affective response within our body. We believe that a caring relationship is earth for empathy to grow.

Vita
Kirstin Burckhardt (b. in South Africa) is a visual artist combining video and performance with sound and spoken word. Critically drawing upon her training in psychology and neuroscience, her practice addresses power dynamics intertwined with the body. Continuously questioning what defines a body, her artistic research focuses on interpersonal space as a locus of sensitivity that surpasses the body-mind duality in favor of empathy, transgenerational trauma, and the power of imagination.

She is the founder of the Body Map Institute and the co-director of the interdisciplinary and international project own own body own with the choreographer Brenda I. Steinecke Soto.

She studied fine arts in Hamburg (Germany), Lyon (France) and Hangzhou (China). Simultaneously, she obtained her masters-level degree in psychology at the University of Hamburg. Her work has been exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions at KINDL Berlin-Centre for Contemporary Art, KAI 10|Arthena Foundation, Deichtorhallen/Sammlung Falckenberg Hamburg, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin, Festival of Future Nows 2017->∞. Exploratorio in Medellín (COL) and the Goethe Institut Sofia (BUL). She has collaborated closely with performing and visual artists from China, Sweden, and Colombia and has received working grants by the ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen), the Goethe Institute Bogotá, and the city of Hamburg’s ‘Elbkulturfonds’ and ‘Arbeitsstipendium’ (working grant).
