Das Anti-Monument hinterfragt vorherrschende Erinnerungskulturen und provoziert einen Prozess des Hinterfragens der Institutionen.
„On Christopher Columbus‘ second voyage to the Caribbean in the 15th century, he imported sugar cane seedlings. The climatic conditions for growing the plant were optimal in the Caribbean, and later also in other (colonial) areas. Cane sugar was a luxury product that over the years became an integral part of European culture - it became the most important export article of the Central American colonies and marked the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade. Millions of people, especially from West Africa, were forced to work under inhumane conditions. Many died already on the crossing or on the plantations. The structural exploitation and violent occupations led to the alienation of regions and people, to the superimposition and extinction of cultural elements such as language, art or historically grown knowledge. Sugar cane became a symbol of global injustice, which continues to the present day“
