Planting an Anti-Monument

Die performative Arbeit von Lisa Lotti Brockmann entstand anlässlich der Lecture Performance im Kunstverein Braunschweig mit Lisa Brockmann, Markus Ettenauer, Deiara Kouto und Tania Sternberg, die im Rahmen des Seminars „Anton Wilhelm Amo – Der Verborgenheit abgerungen“, Leitung: Stefanie Bognitz (MLU), Stella Geppert (Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule) und Susanne Weiß (BURG, QPL), in der Ausstellung „THE FACULTY OF SENSING – Thinking With, Through, and by Anton Wilhelm Amo“ am Sonntag, den 23.08. im Kunstverein Braunschweig stattfand.

Das Anti-Monument hinterfragt vorherrschende Erinnerungskulturen und provoziert einen Prozess des Hinterfragens der Institutionen.

„On Christopher Columbus‘ second voyage to the Ca­ribbean in the 15th century, he imported sugar cane seedlings. The climatic conditions for growing the plant were op­timal in the Caribbean, and later also in other (colonial) areas. Cane sugar was a luxury product that over the years became an integral part of European culture - it became the most important export article of the Cen­tral American colonies and marked the beginning of the transatlantic slave trade. Millions of people, especi­ally from West Africa, were forced to work under in­humane conditions. Many died already on the crossing or on the plantations. The structural exploitation and violent occupations led to the alienation of regions and people, to the super­imposition and extinction of cultural elements such as language, art or historically grown knowledge. Sugar cane became a symbol of global injustice, which continues to the present day“
