Alongside the cultural history of Istanbul that is identifiable in the city’s appearance and in its museums and the much-vaunted contact between Asia and Europe that is expressed in so many different cultural practices, it is precisely Istanbul’s lively rampancy, its provisional and groundbreaking quality, and the many heterogeneous elements that come together here that made us want to initiate a stipend programme. Living and working in this environment for a period is an extremely inspiring challenge for students: we wish to give them the opportunity to re-examine familiar habits and patterns, to come to terms with a foreign language and the new models of thought that this brings with it, and, in this way, to access new artistic and linguistic spaces both artistically and verbally. This book provides an overview of the results and traces of the first three years of our studio programme and of this very special partnership with various institutions and, above all, people in Istanbul.
