The center was founded in 2015 and is equipped with numerous small glass containers as well as large tanks that hold up to 1,700 liters. CO\u2082, which is essential for the growth of algae, is bound in these tanks. However, a large proportion of the CO\u2082 required is produced by the algae themselves. Within a few weeks, a single tank can produce up to five kilograms of biomass. The nutrient medium is contained in the water right from the start and the algae are kept in continuous motion by blowing in air. An uninterrupted water cycle is required as the glass tanks could otherwise break.<br>The attached laboratory makes it possible to test the behavior of the algae under various conditions. An important factor is the supply of light: While it is technically possible to create light sources with up to three times the intensity of the sun, this is not ideal for all algae species. Too much light can inhibit growth, which is why the ratio of light intensity to algae quantity must be precisely controlled. Strict environmental regulations ensure that no algae get into the ground or the sewage system. In addition, it is not permitted to use the algae cultivated there for human consumption, as chlorine is used. However, the use as animal feed is permitted.
