The bowl and fork are now made from the renewable material seaweed. The seaweed requires no additional binding agents and can therefore be either recycled back into the production cycle after use, returned to nature as nutrients, or simply eaten.

For the prototype, we used nori sheets. The roasted seaweed sheets can be easily layered and shaped with water. To create the molds, we designed two-part molds in which the layered, moist sheets were held in place for about 12 hours. The material then reaches its final strength after a certain air-drying phase outside the mold, which varies depending on the dimensions and geometry. We bent the french fry sticks while they were still soft and let them dry in a simple mold made of square timber. We are very impressed by this uncomplicated material and its properties. The seaweed can be firmly bonded multiple times without any additional binding agent and is easy to work with. The resulting shapes are precise and surprisingly sturdy – perfect for disposable tableware.

student:

Noah Gauß,
Julian Stojiljkovic

project:

Reset.

year:

2026

algerotweiß French fry shells and fork made from seaweed Algerotweiß transforms the iconic French fry dish into an environmentally sustainable, single-material alternative.
