incremental chair - Julian Linden, Pia Schlegl, Paul Dieckmann
Incremental sheet forming opens up new possibilities in CNC-assisted sheet metal forming, especially where conventional tools reach their economic limits. The incremental chair explores this process as an approach to holistic CNC-based production in small series.
A customized open source CNC machine is used to manufacture the seat and backrest. These are formed from ground aluminum sheet using incremental sheet forming. The frame is made of plywood and is completely CNC-milled. All components are based on a fully digital process that combines parametric design and direct translation into numerical machine control. This approach enables a high degree of variability, short iteration cycles, and series production without form-bound tools.
