kleiner als drei - Emil Hommel
"Kleiner als drei" (Smaller than Three) is a knife set that examines how emotional attachment to objects comes into being. A knife may seem paradoxical for this: its core function is cutting, it is sharp and can certainly be dangerous. And yet many people are attached to their favorite knife like to hardly any other object in the kitchen. This project pushes exactly that contradiction to its extreme.
Form and craftsmanship follow the classic European knife handle. On one side stands the archetype and a radical reduction. Only metal – cool, clear, almost futuristic. On the other side, a quiet detail with a strong effect: rivets shaped as hearts.
Barely visible in the material, they only stand out on a second glance. This is exactly where the cold tool tips into the warm, the emotional. The rivet holds the blade together. The heart symbolically underscores the connection within the tool of cutting. "Kleiner als drei" does not state emotion, it lets it emerge.
