PA:PES
circular, repairable, adaptable
PA:PES is a recyclable, modular backpack system whose individual modules are made entirely from either polyamide (PA) or polyester (PES). It is durable, waterproof, and fully recyclable, as all materials can be easily separated. The backpack can be customized in just a few steps, allowing users to replace defective modules or expand it with various add-ons—transforming it from an everyday backpack into a hiking pack. Additionally, resource-intensive but rarely used outdoor gear can be rented instead of owned, reducing waste and conserving materials. Once a PA:PES backpack reaches the end of its lifecycle, its modules are returned, collected, separated, and recycled. So a new pack can be made. And the cycle starts all over.

Backpacks come in many variations – for everyday use, hiking, or alpine tours. However, many models remain unused, taking up space while their production consumes a lot of resources. Yet most backpacks are made from multiple materials such as TPU or PU-coated nylon, coated polyester, EVA, acetate, aluminum and many other materials. Typically, this materials are then glued or sewn together. This makes recycling nearly impossible, as the materials cannot be cleanly separated. Repairs are often difficult or unprofitable, meaning defective backpacks are usually discarded. As a result, they end up in landfills or incineration instead of being recycled, leading to a significant loss of valuable resources and avoidable emissions. PA:PES has found a solution to this problem: a modular backpack made exclusively from two materials – polyamide (PA) or polyester (PES). Buckles, zippers and abrasion-resistant fabrics are made from PA, while waterproof bags and padding are made from PES. Since all components consist entirely of one of these two materials, recycling is possible in an easy separation process. When purchasing a PA:PES backpack, you can choose whether to get a new or refurbished backpack. However you will receive a basic version that is ideal for everyday use. It includes an inner bag, made out of waterproof, one hundred percent PES, with a compartment for a laptop and personal belongings, as well as a detachable outer accessory bag. This outer pocket can also be used separately as a shoulder bag, keeping essentials easily accessible. The simple design allows for flexible expansion and customization to meet different needs. A special feature of the PA:PES system is the option to return defective or no longer needed modules. Users can replace individual parts or receive a material deposit refund when they no longer need a component. This ensures a closed material loop, allowing all components to be reintegrated into the recycling process. This significantly extends the product’s lifespan and reduces raw material consumption.
In addition to the basic version, PA:PES offers free, rentable add-ons for different applications: ASCENT add-on is designed for alpine tours and includes specialized holders for ice axes, crampons, and other equipment. It also features a waterproof main bag to protect the contents reliably. DISTANCE add-on is designed for hikers and offers a particularly large, waterproof main compartment, outer pockets for wet gear, as well as attachment loops for tents and compression straps to adjust the volume. Thanks to this modular system, the backpack becomes a versatile companion for any situation. Users don’t have to commit to a fixed model but can customize their backpack according to their needs. Along with the add-ons you can also borrow rarely used outdoor equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, headlamps, cookware etc. This ensures that resource-intensive gear is used efficiently without requiring individual ownership and enabling more people the joy of high quality gear. PA:PES follows two sustainable principles: On the one hand, everyday products that are produced in large quantities are designed to be fully recyclable. On the other hand, shared products are made to be extremely durable, extending their lifespan and making maintenance easier. This resolves the conflict between recyclability and durability. Once a PA:PES backpack has reached the end of its life or is no longer needed, it can be returned. It is then assessed to determine whether it can be refurbished or if it should be separated and fully recycled. This ensures a closed-loop material flow, significantly reducing material waste. PA:PES enables people who enjoy spending time outdoors but also care about the environment to adopt a new, sustainable way of consumption.
