Algenkniffel
A Playful Shift in Perspective
The Kniffel set is made entirely from algae harvested from the local lake. This renewable raw material eliminates the need for fossil-based materials and offers a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics. After use, the material is compostable and can be returned to the natural cycle. The game invites players to rethink how we use materials and, through a playful experience, encourages a shift in perspective toward a future that conserves resources.
The five dice were pressed under high pressure between a square steel die and a punch. The numbers were stamped into the dice using screws after the algae had been compressed. In addition, chitosan was added to the algae to achieve a firmer and stronger structure. For the cup, heat-pressed layers of algae paper were re-moistened, placed over a mold, and vacuum-pressed. The algae paper was pressed under high pressure at 200 °C using a T-shirt press and then cut to size.
