Algenpapier

The algae paper is made exclusively from spiral algae. These algae grow very quickly and are therefore a sustainable resource. They have significantly higher absorbency than conventional toilet paper. When the toilet paper is used in nature during daily bathroom visits, it decomposes on its own and serves as fertilizer for the soil. Thus, algae paper is an environmentally friendly product with an added benefit for nature.

The biggest challenge was finding the right consistency for the algae pulp for paper-making. We also had to determine how fine the pulp should be and at what pressure the paper needed to be pressed and embossed. Through several trials, we were able to resolve these issues. In the process, it became clear that toilet paper made from algae has very high absorbency. With the right amount of pressure, we also achieved a pleasant and soft surface – a result we hadn’t anticipated at first.
