iClose
A mobile phone case that closes itself
The absurdity that concerns us is unhealthy smartphone usage behaviour and the intentional ineffectiveness of the ‘attempts at solutions’ by the responsible tech companies. The resulting object, iClose, is a fictional, innovative product in the Apple style that can be marketed as a physical and more effective version of the so-called ‘digital wellbeing’ function of a time limit. iClose is a locked iPhone case that automatically covers the display again as soon as it is opened, allowing only 40 seconds of smartphone use. The winding motor of an old music box is used to drive a gear mechanism that moves the cover. The acrylic glass material and the round, clear shape are reminiscent of Apple’s design language. In keeping with the rest of the product range, iClose is available in three colour options. iClose aims to draw attention to the highly topical systemic problem of unregulated, completely reckless tech companies and their impact on people’s lives and society.
