“Color is not understood through our visual sense alone, but through all our senses.” Kenya Hara, ‘White’
Our relationship with color is, in many ways, emotional, intuitive, and often difficult to articulate in words. We are generally attracted to certain shades based on an inner feeling, one that is shaped by our personal, cultural, and physical experiences. Likewise, scent enters our world in unexpected ways: it can trigger memories, evoke images, stir emotions, or even tell a whole story.
”People tend to smell in color. “ Dawn Goldworm, co-founder of “olfactive branding company 12.29
The questions guiding this weekly workshop focus on the intersections between scent, color, and design. They are intended to create space for both creative experimentation and critical reflection, encouraging you to explore how olfactory experiences can be translated, transformed, and expressed through color.
In what ways can a smell be interpreted or translated into color?
The task is to document a smell that feels personal to you, one you are connected to, one that relates to you, or one that intrigues you. Over the next few days, your mission is to develop, create, and collect these “sensual experiences” in color. Your work should remain two-dimensional, and you are free to gather materials that help you visualize the smell, not necessarily limited to paper.
Ultimately, the goal is to present your impressions in a cohesive and unified format. This could take the form of a collage, a set of color cards, or another two-dimensional medium that conveys the essence and atmosphere of the smell.
What you will need: motivation to explore, an attentive nose, and curiosity about the outcome.
