Redesigning the human: how information technologies invite to rethink metaphysics

Redesigning the human: how information technologies invite to rethink metaphysics

In 1985, Jean-François Lyotard and Thierry Chaput co-curated Les Immatériaux at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. Conceived as a sensory counterpart to a philosophical essay, the exhibition explored how information technologies reshape our understanding of the human subject. Lyotard emphasized the ambiguous nature of datafication—showing how it serves both as an instrument of modern human mastery and as evidence of an emerging, non-anthropocentric metaphysics. This talk applies that framework to artificial intelligence. Tracing the conceptualization of information back to cybernetics reveals two divergent trajectories. One leads to an ontology where everything reduces to bit structures and thinking becomes mere data processing. The other views information as a catalyst for structure, regarding thought as the product of an underlying, impersonal dynamic that informs Being as a whole. Although artificial intelligence is primarily conceived through the former view and deployed in service of traditional human control, it also fundamentally challenges this project—a tension underscored by problematizing the notion of latent space. These insights invite us to reconsider Lyotard’s intuitions and re-evaluate the meaning of artistic creativity.
