Video essay, 4K Video, 25min
As a video essay oscillating between a time travel story and documentary interviews, ‘Die Ostdeutschen Futuristen’ deals with the discursive limitation of the voices of the children of the post-reunification era. Loosely based on Anna Segher's sci-fi short story ‘Sagen vom Unirdischen’ (1970), a sandman travels back in time and wanders aimlessly through East Germany. In the form of an essay, she encounters memories and politics of the former GDR through places and other post-reunification children. The video essay leads the viewer into cultural prejudices and encourages reflection on the importance of re-evaluating East German identity in a ‘haunted time’ (Doreen Mende). The video essay is complemented by a written essay of the same name that outlines the concept of the ‘East German Futurists’ based on research into the films of the future of the DEFA film studio defa-futurum (1971-1981).
