Excursion: Visit of toolbot
7.10.2024
The idea behind Toolbot arose from the observation that many people buy expensive tools that they only use infrequently. So why pay high purchase costs and sacrifice valuable space for tools that are only used occasionally? Borrowing tools from a DIY store is often associated with long distances, adherence to opening hours and high prices. This is exactly where Toolbot comes in. By renting tools, users can not only save money, but also conserve resources and contribute to reducing electronic waste. To this end, Toolbox has developed a concept for a fully digitalised rental station. This is space-efficient, modularly expandable and equipped with automatic completeness detection. The offers can be booked via a web app. If a tool breaks or shows a high degree of wear, manufacturers replace the damage immediately. However, Toolbot sees itself not only as a rental service, but also as part of a larger movement towards greater sustainability and a sense of community. The start-up plans to continuously expand its offering and gain a foothold in other cities. Collaborative use of the rental stations for parcel deliveries or other exchange products such as toys or garden tools would also be possible. In the long term, Toolbot would therefore like to establish a nationwide network of hire stations. Users should have the opportunity to borrow tools directly in their neighbourhood and thus be able to tackle spontaneous projects without a long lead time. Work is also underway to integrate digital manuals and tutorials to make it easier for users to get started with new projects. So far, only a small number of test stations are running in the cities of Kassel and Berlin. The process is often hampered by bureaucratic hurdles, negotiations with manufacturers and competition from large rivals.
