Teaching art – Course of study in Art Education / Art Pedagogy

The subject areas of Art Education and Art Pedagogy concentrate on the broad area of cultural education. These two subjects make up a single department. In accordance with the philosophy of an art university, the orientation of both subjects is focused on both the artistic and the practical. One of the main areas of research is the development of models for teaching art in a manner that arises naturally from artistic activity. The prerequisites for this approach are time-intensive artistic practice and theoretical reflection on teaching strategies, and the course provides students with a complex educational process. The individual artistic approaches are derived from the study of sensual perception and are positioned in the context of reflective reference systems. In both subject areas, the aim is to combine craft and conceptual aspects and to consider these against the background of both art history and contemporary art.

Art Education – Teaching qualification for ‘Gymnasium’ and other secondary schools

The modularised course of study in Art Education can be taken as part of a course of study for professional teaching qualifications as one of two main subjects at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. The other subject is to be taken at Martin Luther University, as is the accompanying course in teaching (pedagogy and psychology). Students may decide to take their first main subject at the University of Art and Design or at Martin Luther University. The basic structures of the teaching qualification are largely similar for teaching at academically oriented ‘Gymnasium’ secondary schools (comparable with grammar schools in the UK) and for other secondary schools. However, the course contents in Didactics and Art Practice differ depending on the type of secondary school. The process of artistic self-discovery is based on the course of study in Fine Arts for students taking the teaching qualification for ‘Gymnasium’ secondary schools, while artistic practice is focussed on fundamental and craft-based techniques for other types of secondary school. In general, study of Art Education takes place in productive dialogue with Fine Arts and Art Pedagogy. The difference between Art Education and the study of Art Pedagogy lies in concrete career prospects and the qualification to work as a teacher at a ‘Gymnasium’ or other secondary school. Comprehensive specialist, practical and didactic skills are taught in this course. ... Further information

Art Pedagogy

The course of study in Art Pedagogy deals with areas of art education outside of school contexts in various societal areas. Characteristic for this course are the high contingent of artistic practice by the students, the development of multimedia working models for pedagogical practice and the implementation of same in societal processes. As part of an intensive process of artistic self-discovery, an authentic and individual pedagogical approach is developed that considers contemporary arts in their institutional and non-institutional forms by means of excursions, exhibition visits and specialist seminars. In this way, a particular flexibility for pedagogical diversity is created. The focus of artistic action and production is on both reflective and receptive issues that define art pedagogy as an integral component of art and artistic practice. Over this course of study, students will obtain experience in working with art, design, architecture and media (art and design practice) and skills relating to the interrelationships in terms of significance and effect between art, design, architecture and media (art, cultural and design studies). In addition, students learn how to initiate, impart, analyse and interpret cultural activities (art didactics). ... Further information

As an option, the main artistic study period may be taken in two classes with different artistic focuses and teaching concepts.

Prof. Stella Geppert

The subject areas of artistic practice range from sculpture/plastic arts through to context-related intervention art in societal contexts. The methodological foundations of the teaching approach are defined by a performance-related, field research approach that illuminates the artistic process. The linking of artistic, “image/spatial” practice with structural, process-oriented manners of thought and action forms a significant component of the educational approach here. The aim is that art-pedagogical concepts will be developed based on artistic practice and that, in this way, the fields of production, reception and transformation will be interlinked. Prof. Una Moehrke

The focuses of artistic teaching and practice here are the media of drawing, printing technology, painting and performance/body performance, which can be used in a work-related manner or investigated as unbounded, cross-media forms in combination with one another. Installation forms of painting, drawing and video art in spatial contexts and conceptual works in intervention-based exhibition contexts supplement these focal areas. The teaching and imparting of art is discussed as an integral component of arts and is also considered in combination with the issue of the possible transfer modality of art into societal functional areas, thus also fundamentally interlinking art with the reception plane. The aim is to establish communication and understanding between art and life, to experience independent learning in artistic experimentation, and to place artistic practice in theoretical and practical reference contexts for teaching orientation and the reception plane. Teaching and learning as issues in university study, life and subsequent professional activity are considered in artistic practice and are investigated in an interdisciplinary manner in accompanying reflection. Study/theory

The accompanying subjects in art theory can be taken at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and at Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. These supplement the range of practical subjects in the course of study:

Curation, Art Criticism, Art Management – Prof. Dr. Susanne Pfleger

Now more than ever before, artists have to deal with issues and problems that appear to have little relation to art itself. Artists’ economic existences themselves and those areas of artistic creation that can or should only be marketed with great difficulty are dependent on artists developing individual strategies for surviving in the marketplace in the long term. Business and legal knowledge and skills in project management and management of one’s own activity are all necessary here. ... Further information (available only in German)

Educational Studies and Pedagogy – Art Pedagogy – Dayana Lau

Dayana Lau’s teaching activity is concerned with basic issues and problems in educational studies. On the one hand, the main concepts in educational studies are investigated from historical and systematic perspectives; on the other hand, the students consider theoretical issues with the aim of analysing and reflecting upon their own pedagogical activity.Additional areas such as Aesthetics, Philosophy, Psychology and Pedagogy can be studied at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and at Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. Practical placement periods that run for a number of weeks and cooperations with schools and external institutions help to develop social skills and teamwork ability and also allow students to try out their own experience and teaching focal areas in a practical manner. The diversity of artistic and theoretical teaching approaches is presented in seminars, workshops and excursions and is also considered in project work. ...
