Transcriptions and translations

Transcriptions and translations address various barriers, providing access to knowledge for people who do not speak German as their native language. Neurodivergent individuals can read along with the spoken content or review it at their own speed. Those unable to attend an event for any reason can still access the information using the transcript.

Tips for lecturers

  • Most transcription and translation tools require a stable internet connection. To check the internet connection in a room, visit the following website:  https://fast.com
  • Every transcription and translation tool makes mistakes. This should be clearly communicated when using such tools within lectures or events.

  • When using translation or transcription apps, it is particularly important to speak slowly and pause, as the tools transcribe or translate with a slight delay.
  • Complex sentences affect the quality of translation and transcription. The clearer and shorter the sentences, the better the result.
  • Avoid using English within a German lecture and technical terms if possible, as they often lead to incorrect translations.
  • Using a microphone significantly improves the quality of transcriptions and translations. Every speaker should use a microphone. Instructions for using the Rode microphones available at BURG can be found here: Link

Transcription and translation tools

  • Microsoft Translator

    Creates a session that allows students to receive live translation or transcription on their smartphone or laptop. For lectures or presentations in which one or more speakers talks to an audience.

  • Google Translator:

    The tool can be used to provide live translation during a conversation. The translation is available in text form, but can also be read out by the tool. Ideal for discussions or meetings between two people or in small groups.

  • Google Meet:

    The tool allows users to make events accessible remotely. People who are not on site can connect digitally. The tool can also generate subtitles. With an additional feature, these subtitles can be converted into a transcript.

  • DeepL

    DeepL translates written texts or files. The integrated DeeplWrite tool can also help with text formulation. Since the word count is limited, long texts must be translated in sections.
