DIY-Fibre Moulding
Introductory workshop by Andi Wagner
In order to verify and present one’s own designs, the implementation in the actual material with the corresponding technology in the design process is of great importance – in contrast to the mere visualization of the idea. Furthermore, it is only through making that a comprehensive knowledge of the material and technology emerges, so that the design is given the appropriate validity. Last but not least, designers have the opportunity to experiment with the material and technology through their own implementation.
In this specialist task, Andi Wagner made industrial fiber moulding accessible to the students by converting a wet vacuum cleaner. Moulded fiber parts could be produced in a pulp bath using thermoformed, perforated moulds. In a small workshop, Andi demonstrated the resulting possibilities to the students. It is important to note that, firstly, the industrial technology is only partially reproduced and, secondly, that many unknown factors are involved. However, both are ultimately the case with every product development!
