Introduction

by Mareike Gast, Karl Schikora, Andi Wagner and René Braun

The specialist task began with a theoretical insight into the world of paper. Mareike Gast gave a presentation on various paper materials and processes as well as exemplary uses of paper in the design of three-dimensional objects. Karl Schikora then went into more detail about the properties and possibilities of fiber composites in a lecture. He also explained the basic concepts and principles of mold making and serial production – in particular fiber moulding. Andi Wagner gave an inspiring insight into the world of hats: Who wears which hats and why? Which materials played which role in which contexts? Which historical events and circumstances had an influence on certain hat fashions? As the project progressed, the students were given an introduction to vacuum forming by René Braun, head of the plastics workshop. The perforated vacuum formed moulds served as moulds for fiber moulding in the further course of the project.
