Der schwarze Einband des leicht querformatigen Buchs umschließt zwei aneinandergefügte Leporellos – die eine Hälfte kieselgrau, die andere schieferfarben. Beide im Buchdruck mit Klischeeplatten bedruckt – die eine mit schwarzer, die andere mit silberner Farbe. Strophe für Strophe blättert man durch das titelgebende Gedicht von Marilyn Hacker – im englischen Original, oder in deutscher Übersetzung. Über jedem Verspaar steht eine Fotografie der felsigen Küste Kaliforniens – einmal positiv, einmal negativ gedruckt. Fast versteckt und wie der metaphorische Faden des Gedichts, der Flüchtiges und Dauerhaftes verknüpft, ziehen sich feine Linien über die gesamte Rückseite des Leporellos.

The black cover of this slightly landscape-format book encloses two conjoined concertinas – one pebble-grey, the other slate-coloured. Both are letterpress printed using photopolymer plates – using black ink on the one, and silver on the other. Stanza by stanza, we leaf through the titular poem by Marilyn Hacker – in its English original, or in German translation. Above each of the pairs of verses sits a photograph of the rocky coast of California – first printed as positives, then repeated again as negatives. Almost hidden, like the metaphorical thread of the poem, fine lines weave together the transient and the permanent across the back side of the leporello.
