Eine Schriftart als künstlerische Arbeit: »variable-clock-font« ist eine Antwort auf die Frage, wie das aussehen könnte, was zwischen den Ziffern liegt, die die Zeit anzeigen. In ihrer Form als animierte Uhr macht die Arbeit das Ticken der Zeit zu einem Fluss. Hier wird dieser Fluss nun in den Raum des Buchs gebracht: Auf jeder sechzehnten Seite finden wir eine uns bekannte Zahl von 0 bis 9. Auf dem Weg zur nächsthöheren Zahl blättern wir durch Zeichen, die nicht mehr oder noch nicht als Ziffer zu erkennen sind. Das Transparentpapier, auf das sie gedruckt wurden, lässt den Verlauf der Formen erkennen. Wie die nahtlosen Ringe, mit denen die einzelnen Blätter verbunden sind, hat diese Bewegung weder Anfang noch Ende – sie kann endlos wiederholt werden.

A typeface as a work of art: variable-clock-font is a response to the question of what might lie between the shapes of the numbers that indicate time. As an animated clock, the work turns the ticking of time into a continuous flow. Here, that flow is brought into the space of the book: on every sixteenth page, we encounter a familiar digit from 0 to 9. On the way to the next, we leaf through forms that are no longer – or not yet – recognisable as numbers. Printed on transparent paper, we can trace their gradual transformation. Like the seamless rings binding the pages, this motion has no discernible beginning or end – it can be repeated over and over again.
