Creative Commons licences (CC licences)

CC licences allow the free use of works under certain conditions.

CC licences consist of various components that can be used individually or in combination.

  • CC: No copyright protection (the work can be used without restriction)
  • BY: Attribution (the work can be used without restriction, but the creator must be named)
  • SA: Share alike (the work must be published under the same CC licence)
  • ND: No derivatives (the work must not be modified)
  • NC: Non-commercial (the work must not be used commercially)

Examples of CC licence combinations

CC BY: The work can be shared, changed, and used for commercial purposes, but the creator must be credited.

CC BY NC: The creator must be credited. It is not permitted to use the work for commercial purposes.

CC BY NC SA: The creator must be credited. It is not permitted to use the work commercially and the work must be republished under the same licence.

Creative Commons licences are often represented by the corresponding CC icons. Each CC module has its own icon. The icons can be downloaded here: Link
