Meeting Owl

The Meeting Owl is a 360-degree automatic camera that connects to a laptop via USB, like a regular webcam. The device independently recognises the person speaking and automatically focuses on them.

For what?

  • For hybrid conferences with multiple speakers in one place (e.g. multiple people speaking at a table)
  • Live streams or time-delayed streaming of lectures, presentations, or seminars on streaming platforms such as Vimeo or YouTube
  • Video conferences via Google Meet or BURG Meet.
  • Recording the audience for example during question and answer sessions or as an overview camera to show the room situation during lectures to an online audience

How?

  • Plug in the power cable. Connect the USB cable to a laptop or computer. The owl will turn on automatically, lighting up its eyes.
  • Go to settings of the video conferencing tool and select:
    - Camera: Meeting Owl Pro (or 'Meeting Owl').
    - Microphone: Meeting Owl Pro.

Access

Two Meeting Owls are available at Stream Lab.
More Meeting Owls can be found at the faculty offices.

Tips:

  • The quality of the integrated microphones is not optimal. Using the Meeting Owl as a camera only (without using the integrated microphones) in combination with a Rode Wireless Go II set as a microphone system is an easy way to achieve very good audio quality. Select the Meeting Owl as the webcam within the settings of the video conferencing software and the Wireless Go microphones as the microphone.
  • The video signal can then be recorded as a USB video source via OBS Studio or integrated into livestreams.
