Carla Herrig has been an artistic staff member in the Fashion Design program since 2024.
In her teaching, she conveys transhistorical methods of design, in which historical eras and aesthetics of clothing are related to contemporary design practice. Working with international fashion and clothing archives, as well as engaging with material and visual cultural history, form an essential foundation for this approach.
In addition to her teaching, Carla Herrig works as a freelance fashion and knitwear designer, with a particular focus on form development and pattern design. At the heart of her practice is the transformation of textile surfaces into three-dimensional structures. She explores the interplay between clothing, the body, and space, developing experimental pattern-making and construction methods for this purpose. She is currently engaged in intensive research on technical pattern development in knitwear, with a focus on innovative approaches to 3D shaping. Experimental shaping processes and an analytical engagement with materials and techniques characterize her working method—an approach she also conveys in her teaching at Burg Giebichenstein.
Carla Herrig studied fashion design at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, with study periods in fashion and leather design at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn and in accessory design at the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre in Brussels. In 2022, she completed her master's degree in Conceptual Fashion Design at BURG and subsequently furthered her studies in the master's program in Knitting Design at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
