Exkursion to GUT

26.03.2025, Berlin (DE)

GUT has created an innovative makerspace on the former airport site in Berlin-Tegel. A temporary open space has been set up in the air freight halls, bringing together start-ups, researchers and creative minds to work on sustainable and technological solutions. The project’s vision is based on the conviction that people are capable of actively shaping their future and working together to overcome challenges such as climate change and social divisions.

With 10,000 square metres of indoor space and one hectare of outdoor space, GUT offers a wide range of possible uses. Flexible office space, meeting and workshop rooms promote interdisciplinary collaboration, while the spacious marketplace with room for up to 1,000 people serves as an event space for conferences, workshops and events. The offer is complemented by a community kitchen and a ‘Späti’. The aim is to create a lively community that learns from each other and works together on innovative solutions. However, despite the promising concept, there are also challenges. One of the biggest hurdles is the site’s transport links. The planned tram connection is not due to be completed until 2030, which is currently making accessibility more difficult. In addition, the use of the makerspace is initially limited to five years, which requires continuous adaptation and long-term planning. Despite these hurdles, GUT is positioning itself as a hub for innovation and collaboration. New ideas can be developed and trialled here in an open and experimental environment – a decisive step towards sustainable and future-oriented urban development.
