Exkursion to Deutsches Technikmuseum

27.03.2025, Berlin (DE)

At the end of the multi-day excursion, we visited the German Museum of Technology in Berlin. After an intense and content-rich program over the previous days, this museum visit served as a calm and reflective end to our time together. The goal was to give us the opportunity to deepen our experience at our own pace and to focus on individual areas of interest.

The expansive museum features a wide range of exhibitions dedicated to various aspects of the history of technology. Accordingly, our group quickly dispersed to explore specific topics such as maritime navigation, aerospace, or railways. The freedom to move through the museum individually allowed for personal engagement with the exhibits and left space for independent questions and perspectives.

One exhibition that sparked particularly strong interest among us was titled “Alles Zucker.” Here, most of the group came back together. The exhibit offered a comprehensive overview of the history of sugar, from its origins and industrial processing to its societal and economic significance. In addition, the chemical and biological properties of the sugar molecule were explained in a clear and accessible way.

Beyond its classic role as a food ingredient, the exhibition also explored lesser-known but forward-looking applications of sugar. For example, it illustrated how sugar can be used as a renewable raw material for sustainable materials or as an energy source in innovative technologies. These diverse applications highlighted the substance’s relevance to research and development in fields like materials science and energy production.

The exhibition made it clear that sugar is far more than just a sweet additive, it is a key element in the development of sustainable processes and plays a central role in addressing the ecological challenges of the future.
