Object and environment became key artistic categories in various different contexts throughout the 1960s. In this talk, we will compare two different ways of articulating those categories: that of the Brazilian environmental programme spearheaded by Hélio Oiticica, in Rio de Janeiro, and that of the Fluxus-inspired collective Art Terminal, in Milan. What both have in common is the participation of Brazilian artist Antonio Dias, a close friend of Oiticica who moved to Milan in 1968. Using Dias's trajectory as a pivotal point, we will discuss how different approaches to spectatorial participation and the commodity inform those contrasting environmental paradigms.
