FAQ for Students

Questions and answers on all changes in the course of the study.

Due to the spread of the corona virus and to protect everyone, the start of the semester has been postponed to 20 April 2020 and lectures will be held digitally. Concerning the changes in the course of studies we have compiled a FAQ for you to answer any questions that may arise. The list of questions is updated continuously (as of  15 June 2020).

<< University operations and teaching >>

Can I enter the properties?
Students have access to the main locations from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to attend courses which are exceptionally held in attendance and to collect their materials and personal belongings. For the decentralised buildings Schleifweg, Kurvenburg and Oleariusstraße, contact the staff in advance as they are not continuously occupied. Since 2 June, the library has again offered access for students, staff and teachers of the BURG with shortened opening hours Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The university management is working hard to provide further access to the workshops and studios. For this reason, measure concepts are currently being drawn up for each individual facility and location in order to implement the necessary safety and hygiene measures.

When does the lecture period at the BURG start again?
The semester started on 20 April with digital teaching formats.
The university management and the lecturers are aware that in some courses of study the teaching formats can be implemented online well, in others less so. As access to workshops and studios is a prerequisite for many courses of study, not everything can be transferred to the digital format. Since 20 May, therefore, it has been possible to offer classroom teaching in exceptional cases and with a concept for compliance with hygiene and occupational health and safety guidelines. Infrastructures for digital teaching formats or digital forms of communication were developed by the computer centre and are provided here

Can I contact the study information centre if I have any questions? Who can I contact?
You can register for the personal office hours of the Study Information Centre by e-mail and make appointments on site. You can also reach the staff by e-mail and telephone.

Will the summer semester be extended because of the later start?
The summer semester takes place as a compressed semester, which means that the lecture period is not extended.

How do I reach the teachers if I have questions about the courses offered?
The teachers are still available for questions. Please contact them by e-mail.

How are the digital teaching offers implemented?
Depending on the field of study, the teachers have developed concepts and digital teaching offers and informed you. The university management and the computer centre provide various tools on this page to facilitate digital communication and exchange. Currently, it is also possible for Burg students to obtain free programs from Adobe via the Creative Cloud, which can be installed on their own laptops and computers at home. However, this offer is only valid for a limited time. Information on access is available in the newly established BURG Chat in the #support channel.

Can I register my thesis?
You can register your thesis (BA, MA, diploma) as before. Information and registration deadlines can be found here.

Is it possible to submit my thesis alternatively in digital form?
This must be clarified in each individual case, please contact your professor.

How can I validate my student card for the new semester?

  • If the student card only contains the imprint of the old semester, the certificate of enrolment for the summer semester 2020 must be presented at the same time, this is also permitted on the smartphone
  • If the current semester is already printed, the check is carried out as usual
  • in addition, the student's official photo identification must always be presented

Can I still go to the canteen?
The refectories at Neuwerk and Unterburg will remain closed. The Weinberg Mensa and the Harz Mensa have a to-go offer.

Do I still receive my BAföG payments?
According to a decision of the Federal Ministry, there are no disadvantages in BAföG because of Corona (summary of important information in PDF). You can find detailed information here:
https://www.bafög.de/keine-nachteile-beim-bafoeg-wegen-corona-756.php
https://www.bafög.de/informationen-fuer-bafoeg-gefoerderte-757.php

The BAföG office in Halle has a telephone consultation hour, in which employees offer unbureaucratic, preferably contactless help. The BAföG-Office can be reached by phone at +49 345 6847113 or by e-mail at bafoeg(at)studentenwerk-halle.de. Since the end of April, there have also been office hours, which can be attended after registration: https://www.studentenwerk-halle.de/ueber-uns/corona-pandemie#c3008

BAföG recipients can also apply for emergency assistance and receive it if the requirements are met. These loans fall under § 21 paragraph 4 No. 4 BAföG and are therefore not to be regarded as income within the meaning of BAföG.

If the standard period of study is exceeded because the examination is cancelled due to the pandemic or courses are postponed, BAföG is continued to be paid in the "vast majority of cases..." for an "appropriate period" (quote from the BMBF). Should the study program actually be prolonged by the cancellation of examinations, lectures or other university events, it is possible to receive regular BAföG for a longer period of time. For this purpose, it is necessary for students to document exactly which courses have been cancelled. The university must later confirm the cancellations if necessary, if this cannot be proven sufficiently by other means.

Due to the current situation, I have got into an economic emergency. What can I do?
The Studentenwerk Halle will offer financial aid within the scope of its possibilities. The contact person is the social counselling service of the Studentenwerk.

Since 15 June 2020, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has also been providing a total of 100 million euros in grants to support students who have been proven to be in acute need due to the corona pandemic. Depending on the proven need, between 100 and 500 euros can be paid as non-repayable grants by the Studenten- und Studierendenwerke. The application can only be made online at www.ueberbrueckungshilfe-studierende.de. There you will also find all conditions and necessary information.

If you are in existential distress despite contacting these adresses, you can contact the BURG at corona-post(at)  burg-halle.  de.

<< Library and lending >>

Is the library open again?
From Monday, June 2, 2020, the library will provide limited access for students, staff* and teachers of the BURG from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Can I still borrow books?
Borrowing books on site is possible again from 11 May 2020. Please order required media online via the catalogues. You will be notified by e-mail as soon as the media are available. Please also make use of the services of our digital library: https://www.burg-halle.de/hochschule/einrichtungen/bibliothek-mit-archiv-und-sammlung/digitale-bibliothek/

What happens to the books whose loan period has already expired or will expire soon?
The reminder periods were suspended until the month of May.

Can I contact the library with any questions?
If you have any questions about borrowing and research, please contact bibliothek@burg-halle.de

<< Workshops and Studios >>

Can I still visit the workshops or studios?
The spatial resources of the workshops and studios are currently still limited, as only a small number of people can be admitted to the rooms to prevent infection. Priority is given to those who would like to complete their studies this summer semester with the diploma or master's degree and as a master student, then those who would like to complete their studies soon with the diploma or master's degree, the state examination or as a master student and with a bachelor's degree. If there are still capacities available, a further allocation is made for areas of the study programmes, the faculties and the central operating units. For the use of the rooms, "operational measure concepts" are always required; the basis for this are state legal requirements and labour law standards.

How can I fetch my material/work that is still in the studio or workshop?
Please contact the staff of the respective workshop or studio by e-mail.
