Excursion: Studio Makkink & Bey

22.03.2024, Rotterdam (NL)

As part of our excursion, we had the opportunity to get to know Studio Makkink & Bey in Rotterdam. The visit gave us a multifaceted insight into the wide range of work that the studio has produced over its many years of existence, particularly in the field of furniture and exhibition design. Welcomed by Rianne Makkink, we were given a tour of the studio in the port of Rotterdam. We were given an insight into the working methods, but also the large pool of projects hidden behind the office in a large hall. Rianne explained the focus on the particularly high standards of durability and quality that the studio has implemented in its furniture over the years. A central point of our visit was the presentation of the WaterSchool, a project that deals with water consumption and environmental impact. The project uses interactive installations and informative models to illustrate the impact that daily consumption has on water consumption. The concrete consequences of our actions were impressively illustrated here. The WaterSchool shows an approach to translating figures into concrete, imaginable dimensions. Accompanied by multi-layered infographics, it visually translates and opens up spaces for imagining what a more resource-efficient future could look like. By combining art, design and education, the project offers a platform to create awareness and provide information. What was inspiring about the visit to Makkink & Bey was the combination of art, design and exhibition design, which links a personal ecological concern with a design practice.
