lecture: Markus Weber
15.04.2024, Halle (Saale)
Markus Weber, a product designer and wooden toy maker with an M.A. in applied art design from Schneeberg, co-director of Denkstatt Erzgebirge, and a lecturer at Angewandte Kunst Schneeberg, presented the innovative material “mass” based on the project “Mass Suitability.” Originating from the Erzgebirge, this early plastic was traditionally used to cast figures, made from rye, cellulose, and mud chalk – a pure form of calcium carbonate. Dr. Rosenthal later refined the process, using water, starch, and sawdust to achieve a similar materiality. Weber, in collaboration with students from Applied Arts Schneeberg and Denkstatt Erzgebirge, explored “mass” over one semester. In his lecture at the Designhaus on March 15, 2024, Weber showcased four student projects that experimented with new uses for the material. These projects included molding body parts with rattan as a support material, producing paper from house dust, creating toys with silicone molds, and using baked mass as a turning material. Denkstatt Erzgebirge is dedicated to preserving and rethinking traditional crafts in the Erzgebirge region.
