lecture:Bas Spanjers, Greifswald Moor Centrum

15.04.2024, Halle (Saale)

Bas Spanjers is a Dutch landscape ecologist specializing in the restoration of peatlands. In his lecture, he discussed his work at the Greifswald Moor Centrum, paludiculture, and the “Moor muss nass!” campaign. The Greifswald Moor Centrum in Germany focuses on peatland research and conservation, fostering dialogue between scientists, decision-makers, and the public to promote sustainable peatland use. The “Moor muss nass” campaign actively supports moor protection and restoration. Paludiculture, a key concept promoted by Spanjers and the Greifswald Moor Centrum, involves the sustainable management of peatlands by keeping them moist and using them for agriculture. This practice helps preserve peatlands as carbon sinks while providing economic benefits to local communities. Agricultural uses of restored peatlands include cultivating black alder, wet meadows, cattail, reed canary grass, and reeds, or raising water buffalo. To illustrate this, Mr. Spanjers brought samples of paludimaterials and their potential uses.
