Workshop: Conflicted Matter with Garðar Eyjólfsson

· by 9. January 2019

photo_gardar_eyjolfsson_workshop_1

For this year’s Wintersession platform MAKE. is collaborating with materials researcher Garðar Eyjólfsson. Garðar is known for bringing together contextual, material and narrative research in his work as a means to explore & translate zeitgeist topics. We know Garðar from the Iceland University of the Arts (Burg Partner University) where he is the program director of the MA Design: Explorations & Translations program.

In this Conflicted Matter workshop we will explore (energy) industries in Halle locally through the critical lens of multiple narratives in order to seek out, document and embrace new possibilities between humans, technology, culture and the environment.

Initiated by platform MAKE. – Prof. Aart van Bezooijen, Ulrike Mäder, Lorenz Ebersbach

recycling design award 2019
The Recycling Design Award is an annual competition for product items made of waste or leftover materials. They are inviting all creative minded (un)professionals to submit their visionary, original and sustainable artifacts. The focus is to discover which overlooked and waste resources could be turned into future products and/or even future jobs (people creating those items). Here is a video with last year’s contributions exhibited at the Marta Herford Museum.

For more information and registrations visit www.recyclingboerse.org
– Deadline: 15 July 2019 –

We are more than happy to welcome Simon Weisse for a Jour Fixe lecture on December 11th. During this evening he will give us a backstage look at the art of miniature model making for movies. If you share our love for Wes Anderson’s movies such as The Grand Budapest Hotel or Isle of Dogs – then see you Tuesday!

In 2018, Platform MAKE. has been focusing on waste(d) materials including plastic waste (see Precious Plastic Project) and aluminum scrap (see Raw Art Sand Casting). With 2018 going to its end, our theme is going to its end. Inspired by Wes Anderson’s Trash Island, we considered this lecture the perfect–imperfect place to be for you (and us) this December.

Material of the Month: ThermHex Honeycomb Panels

· by 29. November 2018

2018_12_plakat_motm_thermhex_new
We are excited to demonstrate ThermHex Honeycomb Panels as Material of the Month. These next generation materials have a few promising qualities compared to solid panels (such as wood). The inner honeycomb structure provides the material both lightness and structural stability. The open (airy) structure and translucency of the material goes well in combination with (colored) light. Finally, the whole panel is made of a single polypropylene material, a thermoplastic which is recyclable and easy to (heat) transform.

Kick-Off Workshop this Tuesday: From 13.00 – 18.00 we are exploring its construction-lightness, light-translucency, heat-transformation and gather ideas for joints/connections with other materials. Students from all departments are welcomed to join us in getting hands-on with these ThermHex honeycomb panels.

Get your own (free) material samples for experimentation at the Burg Material collection.

In the context of the New Urban Production (Neue Urbane Produktion) exhibition at HALLE 14, Ludwig and friends will be offering a two-day recycling workshop focused on collecting, sorting, shredding and melting wasted plastics into new application ideas. For those who always wanted to get started with do-it-yourself plastics recycling, join the team!

Support: Match my Maker

· by 30. May 2018

Why do we share this video? Not only because this is Yi-Cong Lu speaking – a dedicated BURG graduate, who helped many student projects as design assistant – but because we believe this is a wonderful challenge: matchmaking people in need with clever solution makers. If you share our interest – please click here to vote for the “Match my Maker” project with a single click (No registration required – Voting possible until June 6th).
