Due to the spread of the corona virus, the aptitude test of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle will be conducted digitally this year. In order to answer your questions in the best possible way, we have compiled this FAQ for you. We adapt the questionnaire constantly.

Until when can I apply to study at the BURG?
The registration phase for the aptitude test was possible up to Sunday, 22 March 2020. The online application for admission to a Master's programme for the winter semester 2020/21 is possible from April 1 to May 15 at masteranmeldung.burg-halle.de.
Can I change my choice of study again after registering for the aptitude test?
Even if you have registered online for a specific course of study, you can still change your selection. Please contact Elena Pastjan (pastjan(at)burg-halle.de) of the examination office by e-mail and quote the code number which you received when you registered with AZUL. In addition, a digital document ("Study Wish") will be available on the upload portal ep.burg-halle.de from 23rd March, in which you should select your final study wish in addition to uploading all files and folders.

By when can I submit my portfolio?
Digital portfolio submission is possible from 23 March to 22 April 2020 via the upload portal ep.burg-halle.de. Prior to this, you had to register at https://azul.burg-halle.de. The registration phase is now closed.
Where do I upload my digital portfolio and the documents I received after registration?
After completing your registration for the aptitude tests, a PDF document was automatically generated which you must download and print out. Fill in all documents completely and scan them back in or take a photo with your smartphone.
Then go to ep.burg-halle.de. There you can log in with your AZUL access data (the code you received upon registration and as password your date of birth in the form YYYY/MM/DD).
On the platform ep.burg-halle.de you will also find instructions ("Please read first"), which you should read through first. In addition to the PDF you have received by registering with AZUL, you can upload your certificates and CV here, as well as your work from the folder "Folder".
What exactly does digital portfolio mean?
We need digital images of the works in your portfolio. We recommend you scan or photograph these works. Please note that 200 MB of storage space is available per each applicant.
In the Design Department your portfolio should contain at least 20 samples of your work. The work must have been created by yourself. The digital portfolio should consist of drawings and other artistic and/or design works that show individual interests, working methods and presentation skills and demonstrate interest in the chosen subject.
For applications in the BA Multimedia|VR-Design courses of study, moving images or audio files can also be submitted (for information on how this is done, please see the following question).
In the Department of Art your portfolio should contain up to 20 samples of your work. The works must have been created by yourself. The portfolio should consist of artistic works (drawings, objects, photographs, etc.) that show your individual approach and viewpoints and demonstrate your interest in the chosen field of study. Sketchbooks can also be submitted digitally in extracts and count as one work. Data with audio-visual works (video, animation, sound pieces) are only permitted for the field of study Time-Based Arts and are expressly requested here.

What do I do with larger files like moving images or audio files?
For the submission of moving images/audio files etc., only insert download links (e.g. WeTransfer, Google Drive, Dropbox or links to YouTube or Vimeo) into a Microsoft Word, PDF or Open/LibreOffice document. Please also upload this document to the folder "Folder".
How can I still upload the work from my portfolio and all other documents without a professional scanner?
You can also simply take photos of the work with your smartphone or digital camera and upload them in jpg. format for example. Alternatively we recommend the smartphone app Nextcloud (Android or Apple iOS).
With the Nextcloud app you can connect directly to the upload portal ep.burg-halle.de and upload photos of your documents (PDFs of registration, CV, certificates) as well as photos of works from your portfolio. You can find out exactly how Nextcloud works on the upload portal ep.burg-halle.de in a separate description on the homepage.
Do I have to use the Nextcloud app to upload my documents?
No, you can also simply scan and upload your documents and photos on your own. We recommend the app only as a relief or in case you don't have the possibility to scan documents.
What size can my digital portfolio be?
Each applicant can have a maximum of 200 MB of storage space in total.
What do I do if the colours and material of the digital images of my work do not look like the original?
We are aware that photos or scans do not exactly reproduce the original. This circumstance will be taken into account by the examiners. You do not have to spend any additional expenses to have your portfolio professionally digitised.
Is it still possible to send analogue portfolios by mail to the BURG?
No, unfortunately this is not possible. The portfolios can only be submitted digitally, as the majority of the teachers cannot be on campus to view or pick up analogue portfolios due to the current situation.
What do I do with works that I cannot simply scan in?
Try, for example, to take photos of your work from different perspectives and supplement them with notes on the materials used.
How do I know if my digital portfolio has been sent and arrived?
You can access your digital portfolio yourself at any time via ep.burg-halle.de with your access data and see whether everything is online.
Can I upload my portfolio again?
Yes, you can use ep.burg-halle.de and your access data to delete, change and upload your portfolio at any time until April 22, 2020.
Is the deadline extended if I have not yet received my portfolio from another university?
Unfortunately, the deadlines cannot be extended. In exceptional cases, please contact Ms. Pastjan from the examination office by e-mail at pastjan(at)burg-halle.de.
Who keeps me informed about the current status of my application?
You will be informed about the current status of the processing by e-mail.
The procedure of the aptitude test
The procedure for the aptitude tests will differ depending on whether you apply to study in the art or design department. You will receive information on this by e-mail. Therefore, please check your e-mail inbox regularly.

What is the procedure for the qualifying examination in the Design Department?
From 23 March to 22 April you can upload your portfolio and all other documents digitally on the portal ep.burg-halle.de.
On April 23rd you will receive your technical assignments by e-mail, which you solve as "homework". This mail will also contain further deadlines and details.
By May 15th, the subject papers will be reviewed by the examination board. On 22 May at the latest, you will receive an e-mail asking you whether you have been invited to an interview.
As things stand at present, the personal interviews will take place from 8 to 12 June in Halle during this period.
When and where will the aptitude tests from the Design Department take place?
On April 23rd you will receive an e-mail with your technical tasks which you are to solve at home. In the e-mail you will receive information on deadlines and details.
When do the aptitude tests from the Design Faculty take place?
If you are invited to an interview, as things stand today this will take place on site in Halle from 8 to 12 June. You will receive further information by e-mail.
What if I am not allowed to travel at the time of the interviews?
We hope that by June the corona crisis will have been so far contained and you will be able to travel to Halle safely. If this is not the case, you will be informed about alternatives as soon as possible.
When will I find out whether I will be invited to a suitability interview?
Your submitted assignments will be reviewed by 15 May. By May 22 at the latest, you will receive an e-mail asking whether you have been invited to a personal interview.
How do I submit the assignments?
When you receive the assignments, you will learn more about how to submit them.
Do I have to be at home for the aptitude test?
Yes, you should complete the assignments you are given on your own and therefore also in a private, quiet place.
How do the personal interviews take place?
We will inform you about the exact procedure of the aptitude interviews by e-mail. As things stand at present, they will take place in person on site at the BURG.

The interviews are scheduled for May 14 and 15. You will be informed of your individual date at the beginning of May when you are informed whether you are admitted to the examination procedure on the basis of your portfolio.
How do the aptitude interviews take place?
We will inform you promptly by e-mail about the course of the interviews. According to the current status, the personal interviews will take place digitally.
Which tool is used for the interviews?
You will be informed promptly by e-mail with the invitation to the interview which tools the Art Department will use for the interviews.
What happens if the Internet connection breaks down during the interview?
We will not consider technical problems in a negative light, but try to find a solution together.
