Chat.AI

Chat AI is a data-protection-compliant alternative to the ChatGPT chatbot from OpenAI. The tool is provided by the Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung Göttingen (GWDG) and hosted on servers at universities in Lower Saxony, ensuring that no data is stored abroad or by private companies. All user-related data is stored locally and deleted after the session ends.

For what?
Chat.Ai is a text-generating AI and can be used in various scenarios:

  • Brainstorming and generating ideas Documentation of projects, creative and scientific writing: creating outlines, formulating phrases, structuring texts, providing feedback Structure and organize tasks
  • Support in coding
  • Support in data analysis (caution with calculation tasks: chatbots often make mistakes here)
  • Create blueprints for teaching projects or events and (exam) assignments  Summarize or simplify texts and scripts  Translate (however, translation tools such as DeepL are more suitable for this task)
  • Create concepts for (teaching) projects or events and (exam) tasks
  • Summarize or simplify  texts and scripts
  • Translation (however, translation tools such as DeepL are more suitable, as chatbots often change content during translation)

Limitations
Like most chatbots, Chat.AI is not well suited for computational tasks, literature references, and writing texts with source references. Chatbots can’t calculate and often hallucinate, leading to incorrect or fictitious sources. Sources must therefore always be verified.

For whom?
Available to all BURG members.

How?

  • A command (prompt) can be entered in the lower text field. A file, such as a text, can be uploaded using the plus sign at the bottom right of the input field.
  • Select and set a model on the right.

Setting options (right column):

  • - How creative, i.e., how logical or free the generated answers should be
  • - How closely they should follow the prompt
  • - Whether there is a superior prompt (system prompt) that should always be executed (example of a system prompt: “always respond in simple language”).
  • - “Memory” function: The AI can remember content from previous chats. This information is only stored locally.
