Key Information for International BURG Students

Residence Registration

If you will be living in Halle for more than three months, you must register with the Citizens’ Service Office (Bürgerservice) within 14 days of your arrival. This also applies if you move to a different address within Halle.

To register, you must book an appointment through the City of Halle’s website. If no appointment is available within the 14-day period, this is not a problem. Simply book the next available appointment. You will then receive a queue number for your appointment by email.

Applying for (or Extending) a Residence Permit

You can only make an appointment with the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde) after you have completed your residence registration.

If you are from a country outside the EU or EEA, you will need an electronic residence permit in addition to residence registration. You should submit your application to the Foreigners’ Registration Office in Halle (Saale) approximately 6–8 weeks before your visa expires. The same applies if you need to extend your residence permit.

You can submit your application online via the following link: Application for or Extension of a Residence Permit.

Self-Employment or Freelance Work Alongside Your Studies

If you are from a country outside the EU or EEA and would like to become self-employed or work as a freelancer alongside your studies, you will need approval from the Foreigners’ Registration Office.

Such activities may be permitted under the so-called “120-day rule.” The main requirements are that your studies must not be negatively affected and that there is a recognizable connection between your planned activity and your field of study.

Important: Before starting any self-employed or freelance activity, you must submit an application to the Foreigners’ Registration Office. You may only begin the activity once official approval has been granted.

To apply for permission to undertake freelance work, you will generally need the following documents:

  • Proof of registration with the tax office (Finanzamt)
  • Confirmation or approval from the university (e.g., from professors)

Depending on your individual circumstances, the Foreigners’ Registration Office may request additional documents.

If you have any questions, please contact the Foreigners’ Registration Office directly: ed.ellah@edreohebrednealsua

Martin-luther university Halle-wittenberg Language Centre

As a BURG student, you can participate in the language courses offered by the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) Language Centre.

Course offerings are published approximately five weeks before the start of the semester. To register, you will need access to MLU’s Stud.IP platform. To obtain access, you must first complete this form and send it back to us.

For registration in the winter semester, please send the completed form to ed.ellah-grub@odatruh between 1 August and 31 August.

Please note that MLU students are given priority when course places are allocated. This means that beginner-level courses in particular often fill up very quickly.

International BURG students interested in funding can find comprehensive information here about the funding opportunities offered by the International Office, including the respective application deadlines and requirements.

The International Office awards STIBET scholarships to international students. These are financed by the DAAD with funds from the Federal Foreign Office.

Application deadlines

The application deadlines for STIBET scholarships are March 15 for the summer semester and September 15 for the winter semester.

We offer three different scholarships for enrolled international students: The graduation scholarship, the scholarship for especially committed international students, and the scholarship for more equal opportunities. These are exclusively for students who are considered “foreign students,” i.e., persons with foreign citizenship and a university entrance qualification (HZB) obtained abroad.

All students with foreign citizenship are eligible to apply. However, if you also have German citizenship, you are unfortunately not eligible to apply.

If you already receive a full scholarship from the DAAD or another public organization, you are unfortunately not eligible to apply for this scholarship. However, if you receive a partial scholarship, we will be happy to review your individual case to determine whether further funding is possible.

Further information

The scholarships are not offset against BAföG benefits – both benefits can be received independently of each other.

As we only have a limited amount of funding available and often receive a large number of suitable applications, we are unable to support all applicants. Scholarships are awarded for a minimum of one month and amount to at least €250 per month. The exact amount may vary depending on the funds available.

The selection committee includes representatives from both departments, the rectorate, the International Office, and the Office of Student Affairs. The selection is made by the committee based on the submitted documents.

This scholarship is aimed at international students who wish to successfully complete their degree within one year. To be eligible for funding, applicants must have achieved good grades during their studies and be expected to successfully complete their degree within this time frame.
