At BURG, students can apply for a semester or internship abroad. BURG currently has partnerships with over 70 universities in Europe and beyond.  In the left-hand sidebar, you'll find an up-to-date overview of BURG's partner universities in two lists (Erasmus and worldwide).

On the following pages, you will find information about studying in Europe with an Erasmus scholarship and studying worldwide (without an Erasmus scholarship), as well as information about internships in Europe with Erasmus+ and funding opportunities for internships worldwide. If you are interested, you can also read reports from former students about their experiences.

Traineeships abroad are organized by the Office for Erasmus Traineeships Saxony-Anhalt. You can apply for an internship abroad at any time.

Studying Abroad with Erasmus+

The Erasmus grant is a financial support program offered by the European Union. It enables students to spend a semester abroad at a partner university in Europe.

In our download section, you will find all the important information regarding the internal application process for an exchange placement (deadlines, procedure, information on partner universities), as well as application guidelines. The steps involved in the application process are summarized in this information sheet.

This download section contains templates for the internal application for a semester abroad or an internship worldwide (outside of Erasmus). You will also find templates and documents here that are relevant after you have been accepted for the PROMOS scholarship.

Download Area Erasmus+

Our download area contains templates for all phases of the internal application process. You will also find information here regarding the strategy and implementation of the Erasmus program and its priorities at our university.

Find all downloads here.

Application Process for a Semester Abroad at our partner universities worldwide

The application process for an exchange program at one of our partner universities outside Europe is similar to that within Europe. One key difference is that you will not receive an Erasmus grant there; instead, you can either apply for the PROMOS grant for partial funding or—as is the case in Japan—receive a grant from the partner university.

Due to various crises, the range of global destinations is currently limited (Ukraine, Israel).

Download Section for Applications Worldwide

Here you will find documents for all stages of the application process, as well as specific documents required for the PROMOS Scholarship.

Applying outside of partner universities with tuition fees (Free Moving Student)

In theory, you are free to apply for exchange programs at universities outside our partnership network. These applications are referred to as “Free Moving Student” applications.

However, there are a few important points to note:

  • Please be aware that many universities do not accept applications from Free Moving Students, but only from partner universities.
  • If these universities charge tuition fees, you will unfortunately have to cover them yourself.
  • At these universities—even if they are located within Europe—an Erasmus grant is not available.
  • The application process is handled individually by you personally and not through the International Office.

There are the following options for finding a university:

  • Through your own research
  • Through private providers, such as the organization “World of Students

Erasmus Traineeships

Traineeships in EU member states as well as in Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, and Turkey may be funded through an Erasmus+ grant. The Office for Erasmus Traineeships Saxony-Anhalt, based in Magdeburg, is responsible for this. It is a regional institution of the seven universities of Saxony-Anhalt and offers Erasmus+ supported traineeships for students, graduates, PhD students and trainees (Auszubildende) including preparation, support of the search for traineeships, financial support and Europass.

Students and graduates are eligible to apply for an internship. Please refer to the relevant information on the Traineeship Office’s website.

Traineeships worldwide

The Erasmus Traineeship Office in Saxony-Anhalt can also provide limited funding for internships outside Europe. However, unlike in the Erasmus program countries, only limited funds are available for this purpose, meaning that (unlike in the program countries) not all applicants can be funded. An alternative is to apply for the PROMOS scholarship, which is awarded through the International Office.

There are many experience reports on the website of the Traineeship Office.

PROMOS scholarship

The PROMOS scholarship is a funding program that supports the international mobility of students at German universities by providing financial resources for stays abroad.

Here you can find all the information you need about the PROMOS scholarship: amount, duration, funding opportunities, special funding, and much more.

The application deadlines are as follows:

February 1 for study abroad programs in the summer semester of the same year

July 1 for study abroad programs in the winter semester of the same year

Please submit the following documents electronically to the International Office:

1. Professor’s recommendation letter: if one was already required for your application to the partner university, that can be used here as well; otherwise, please use this form (in German or English).

2. Letter of motivation/project description/status of preparation

3. Transcript of previous studies

4. Portfolio

5. Letter of acceptance from the partner university (may be submitted later)/ letter of acceptance from the traineeship position

6. For traineeships please fill out this form.

All details regarding funding amount, duration, opportunities, and special grants can be found in this document: Information on the PROMOS Scholarship.

BAföG Abroad

Study visits and internships that you complete abroad are also eligible for funding under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). Students who receive domestic BAföG are eligible in all cases. Students who are not eligible for domestic BAföG can also receive foreign BAföG due to the higher costs associated with a stay abroad. This financial support can sometimes be combined with other programs such as ERASMUS. Individual advice from the responsible BAföG office can help here.

Once you know the destination country for your exchange, you can use this link to find the relevant BAföG office abroad: https://www.xn--bafg-7qa.de/SiteGlobals/Forms/bafoeg/weltkarte/weltkarte_formular.html?nn=384532
