What do you associate with Japan? Minimalistic design, kimonos, origami or shibori? Well, those are stereotypes which might be true in some areas but not in the district of Shimokitazawa in Tokyo. Its colourful streetart and thriftshops contrast the minimalist japanese aesthetic.

Certain characteristics of japanese patterns (such as small scaled patterns or a particular technique) might serve me as inspiration, but they are never used as a direct translation true to the original.

The fabric series represents a journey in which the patterns gradually break free from clichés.
