Art Fundamentals at the BURG

The BURG offers a unique 'Grundlagenstudium'. Our students are firmly anchored in their specialised class from day one and at the same time integrated into a cross-class foundation course. In the four-semester 'Grundlagenstudium' programme, they have the opportunity to find out which artistic methods and reflection strategies they want to use in their further studies in exchange with students from all departments.
The wide-ranging ‘Grundlagen’ programme gives students the opportunity to choose from and try out a wide variety of media and techniques. Or - to concentrate on one of them in particular. In the numerous artistic workshops, students can acquire in-depth knowledge in dealing with the respective materials and technical possibilities in order to be able to realise future projects.
In addition to artistic production, the presentation and communication of their own work is seen as part of artistic practice. The areas of theory are part of the teaching right from the start, so that students can think through their development plans precisely with a view to historical and current artistic positions.

The 'Grundlagenstudium' programme supports students in consistently pursuing their own questions and, thanks to the fundamentally interdisciplinary structure of the courses, also opens up a range of artistic approaches and techniques for finding solutions.

The courses offered by the Art Fundamentals for the 2026 summer semester will be published on the Grundlagen website on 2 March 2026.

Please note that registration for courses will only be possible from 9 March 2026 onwards.

Registration for basic courses in the art fundamentals

Registration for the basic courses takes place in two rounds of elections.

First round of voting: 9–12 March 2026

Please note that in the first round of registration, you can only sign up for courses starting on 9 March 2026 at 9 a.m. Unfortunately, we can't accept any registrations before this date.

From this point onwards, you can register directly with the lecturers for the courses in the summer semester 2026 by email.
The registration deadline is Thursday, 12 March 2026, at midnight.
By midnight on Sunday, 15 March at the latest, you will receive feedback from the lecturers as to whether you can participate in the respective course.
Important: If you have received several acceptances whose dates overlap or are incompatible with your timetable, please notify the relevant lecturers immediately. This will enable other students to take your place and make use of the available spaces.

Second round of elections (succession procedure): 16–19 March 2026

Please note that in the second round of selection, registration for courses will only be possible from 9 a.m. on 16 March 2026. Unfortunately, registrations received before this date cannot be considered.

The second registration period begins on Monday, 16 March 2026, at 9 a.m. and ends on Wednesday, 18 March, at midnight.
In this round, you can apply for any remaining places in the courses.
Feedback from the teaching staff will be provided by midnight on Thursday, 19 March 2026, at the latest.

Further information:

If you are unable to attend after accepting a place, please inform the relevant lecturers as soon as possible so that your place can be reallocated.
Some courses have a limited number of participants due to space or technical constraints.
If you have not been able to secure a place on your preferred course, there will be further opportunities to participate in the coming semesters.
When planning your study calendar, please pay close attention to any overlapping dates.
