Master's course

Multimedia Design

Focuses of this course of study

Screen design and interaction (design and interactivity), media presentation, design of moving images (2D animation, video and audio editing), design of digital products, 3D visualisation/animation and scientific simulation, virtual reality (VR scenarios) and experimental studies.

Aim of the course

With its university-like structure, the art school’s format allows students to identify and express their individual strengths and goals. The main concern here is the nurturing of visions. The goal is to give graduates the ability to identify design challenges and to meet these in an independent, flexible and open-minded manner. In so doing, graduates will focus on the tools of their discipline during their studies and will acquire a mastery of these tools.

Teaching content

The course of study in Multimedia|VR Design is based on the teaching of solid artistic-design fundamentals. Team-oriented interdisciplinary project work is at the core of the subject-specific training. Course elements in media sciences, natural sciences and the humanities complement the range of subjects offered. In this course of study, interactive multimedia products are sketched, media-compatible ideas and visions are developed, product-language versions are formulated and designed in detail, and functional prototypes are developed.

The project topics covered in this course of study include: interactive multimedia presentation, media conception and screen design, conception and design of e-learning products and computer games, 3D modelling, visualisation and animation e.g. architecture visualisation, simulation of research results, experimental interactive products and immersive VR scenarios, conception of mixed and augmented reality applications.

Prerequisites

General qualification for university entrance, and artistic suitability. Basic skills in image processing, DTP and web design. Two-month pre-university practical experience period in an advertising agency, PR agency or in the corresponding department in a company, or completed vocational training in the print or media sectors. Exceptions: The general qualification for university entrance can be waived in cases of exceptional talent combined with professional experience.

Occupational field

Conception and visual design of two-dimensional and three-dimensional action spaces and scenarios, conception and design of the phenomenality of digital products, design of static and variable appearance forms of non-material objects and spaces, structuring and image-language coding of interactive human-machine interfaces for screen-oriented and non-material three-dimensional action spaces and scenarios (VR), product design for the control and navigation of interactive products.
